I have always been away because of work and then one day, I got a call from my son asking me about student auto insurance. Is it reasonable to add him to my policy instead of getting a separate insurance?

Well, time really flies Frank. What parents often overlook during the teenage years is that these are the times that your child will start to start to drive. This is also the time when teens want to be independent but are still totally dependent on their parents. So, the question of getting them a separate student auto car insurance still depends on the situation. You may ask your agent for a quote on different options.
When your teenager finally starts to drive it is a better option to list them on your car insurance policy first, rather than taking out one of their own. Adding your teenager to your existing policy is usually cheaper than purchasing a new student auto insurance policy. This will be applicable when you are going to let your teenager drive your car around from time to time, or you own the vehicle he is driving. Your son will just be considered as an additional, ‘occasional’ or as a ‘pleasure-use only’ driver; not the primary driver. This allows you to take advantage of any discounts on your policy as well. But, if you buy your teenager their own car, then, it is best if you get a separate student auto insurance policy on that car. Technically anyone driving your car with permission is still insured by your company. So, it is still a wise idea to add your teenage driver to your policy.

However you decide to insure your teenager; always make sure you educate them on car safety, since they are a driving risk. Remember: if they get into one accident, your insurance rates are going to skyrocket. Just encourage safe and sensible driving to keep a clean driving record.
